Member in the Spotlight – Jen Philips

It’s time to recognize our next Member in the Spotlight! For March, our coaching staff unanimously voted for someone who shows up consistently, signs up for skill sessions and stays after class to work weaknesses, is always kind, helpful, positive, and humble. You may have seen her in Wodify squatting ALL of the weights, but this month’s Member in the Spotlight is none other than Jen Philips!

1. First, tell us a little about your CrossFit story! How long have you been with the Port and how did you get started?
I’ve been doing CrossFit for almost 6 years with the last two to three being here at The Port. My fitness journey began with doing at-home programs like Insanity and p90x, but after hitting a plateau with those programs, I joined a local gym and loved the group aspect of those workouts. Soon after, I found my way to a CrossFit gym and fell in love with lifting and metcons.  After several years there, I took a Rowing class at The Port and I never left. You’ve been stuck with me since!

2. What has changed for you since joining? What change are you most proud of?
I think what has changed the most for me is my mental game.  Believing you can do something is half the battle.  It will always be something I need to work on, but it’s slowly getting better.

3. What are some things you love to do outside of the gym?
Travel to Iceland as often as possible, eat everything, read, hike, spend time at home with my girlfriend and dogs, eat everything…

4. If you were an existing or new color addition to the crayon box, what would you be and why?
I would be a Tie dye crayon because some days you might feel a little bit pink and the next day you might feel a little bit yellow, or green or blue or even a little bit Alexis…haha you see my point.

5. If you had to compare yourself to an animal, what would it be and why?
My dog Mulligan. Short, stout, and sassy!

6. What is your favorite meal or treat that you can’t live without?
My favorite meal is hands down anything you can make in bowl form, and my favorite treat has been and always will be ice cream with alllll the toppings!

Jen, we are so happy you came to take a rowing class with us as we are lucky to be “stuck” with you! We love having you as a dedicated 7am-er and we admire your work ethic and dedication towards reaching your goals. As you mentioned, believing you can do something is half the battle, and we want you to know that we believe you are capable of whatever you set your mind to. Thanks for being you!
